Everything below comes from the resort’s own information, current booking listings, and thousands of recent guest reviews, including what Canadian travellers report. When we’ve been, we’ll update this with how it actually felt.
The most recommended adults-only all-inclusive in the Cancún area isn’t in Cancún. It sits thirty minutes north of the hotel zone, past the ferry docks at Puerto Juárez, on a gated stretch of white sand called Playa Mujeres, and it has been near the top of the rankings since 2007. Excellence Playa Mujeres is a five-star, adults-only, all-suite resort with around 450 suites, and almost every best-of list we checked puts it first or close to it. This guide covers what the price actually includes, where it falls short, and who should book it.
Getting there
You fly into Cancún International, which Air Canada and WestJet both serve nonstop from Toronto in about four hours, with plenty of winter routes from other Canadian cities. From the airport it’s 28 kilometres to the resort gate, roughly 40 minutes.
Book a private transfer before you land. The established operators charge from about $33 US each way for a van that seats up to eight, or around $65 US round trip, and they track your flight so a delay doesn’t strand you. A taxi hailed at the arrivals curb costs noticeably more for the same drive. The resort sells its own transfer too ($), at a premium.
One thing to weigh before you book: Playa Mujeres is removed from everything on purpose. Downtown Cancún is half an hour away and cabs from the resort are expensive, so guests who plan daily excursions end up paying for the seclusion. If you want to walk out of the lobby to shops and restaurants, this is the wrong resort.
The setting and who it’s for
The resort is adults-only, 18 and up, on a long, calm beach inside the gated Playa Mujeres development. The water here is shallow and gentle because Isla Mujeres sits offshore and takes the force out of the swell. After our look at Mexico’s beach flags and currents, that matters more than most brochures let on. This is one of the few beaches near Cancún where you can spend real time in the ocean.
Who it suits: couples, honeymooners, and adult friend groups who want pool days, long dinners, and quiet evenings, with service good enough that reviewers keep naming individual staff members years later. Guests on the Canadian review site Monarc.ca rate it 4.7 out of 5, and the word that keeps coming up is “immaculate.”
Who should skip it: anyone who wants a big night scene. Evenings here are a show, live music, and a nightcap, not a party, and reviewers agree that’s by design. Anyone who wants the newest build on the strip should look next door at Excellence Coral, which opened in 2025. Worth knowing: the resort opened in 2007, and the Excellence Collection has since put its properties through a refresh worth more than $50 million US. Most current reviews describe the place as spotless. A few still notice the age in spots, and we’d call that a fair reading of a 19-year-old property that’s been kept up well rather than rebuilt.
What the all-inclusive covers
This is where Excellence Playa Mujeres separates itself. The base package is unusually complete, and reviewers rarely complain about surprise charges.
Included: ten restaurants open to every guest, none of which take or need reservations. All 14 bars, pouring premium brands. 24-hour room service, alcohol included. Wi-Fi throughout. Non-motorized watersports, meaning kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear. Daytime activities and a nightly show. Gratuities are in the rate too, though staff can accept tips if you offer.
What costs extra ($): spa treatments, the spa’s hydrotherapy circuit if you’re not in an Excellence Club room, motorized watersports, golf at the neighbouring course, excursions, and a short list of top-shelf wines.
The upgrade tier is Excellence Club. It buys top-floor and better-placed suites, a private lounge with its own breakfast and afternoon bites, reserved beach and pool areas, an upgraded minibar, the hydrotherapy circuit included, and access to Magna, an eleventh restaurant reserved for Club guests. Reviewers describe it as a comfort upgrade rather than a rescue. The base experience doesn’t feel gated, which is more than we could say about some resorts at this price.
Amenities
The suites
There are no standard rooms. Junior Suites start at 807 square feet, every one with a terrace or balcony and its own whirlpool tub, and the categories climb through swim-up suites, ground-floor terraces with plunge pools, oceanfront views, and two-storey rooftop-terrace suites with private plunge pools and outdoor showers. Two honest caveats from reviews: the showers are glass-walled and open to the room, which not every pair of travelling friends appreciates, and the ground-floor swim-up terraces trade some privacy for that convenience.
Pools
Seven of them, including a lazy river that winds through the grounds and swim-up bars where you’d want them. Four pools are heated in winter, which matters in January more than the brochures admit. Chair space is generally findable, which is not nothing at a 450-suite resort.
Restaurants
Ten for all guests plus Magna for Excellence Club, and nothing takes reservations. You walk in, every night, wherever you like. Basmati, the Indian room, is the one reviewers call the best meal of their trip. Agave does Mexican with tableside mariachi, Spice runs teppanyaki and a sushi bar, The Lobster House does seafood by the water, and The Flavor Market pairs tapas with wines. Toscana covers the buffet end at breakfast and lunch. Reviews on the food run strong overall with the occasional inconsistent night, which across eleven kitchens is about as good as this category gets.
Bars
Fourteen, and they’re not filler. A proper martini bar, a cigar lounge, a sports bar with pool tables, a coffee café, swim-ups, and Alegria, a small nightclub for the nights the quiet resort isn’t quiet. Premium liquor is included rather than an upcharge.
The beach
Three kilometres of white sand with a calm, shallow entry. The currents that pile sargassum onto the Riviera Maya mostly pass this stretch by, and staff rake what does land each morning. It’s not zero seaweed, especially May through September, and the beach itself is more sheltered than dramatic. If you’ve seen photos of Maroma or Tulum, adjust expectations slightly. What you get instead is ocean you can actually swim in.

Spa and gym
Miilé Spa is the other thing guests plan their trip around. The hydrotherapy circuit runs about an hour and costs extra ($) unless you’re in Excellence Club, and treatments are extra ($) at any tier. The gym runs 24 hours with fitness and yoga classes included, and the beachfront yoga palapa is the version of it you’ll actually use on holiday.
Entertainment
Nightly theatre shows, live music around the bars, and a daytime activity program. It’s competent rather than spectacular, and the resort seems comfortable with that. Guests who wanted their evenings loud keep saying so in reviews, and guests who wanted a quiet drink keep booking again.
Our take
Excellence Playa Mujeres is the polished sure thing of the Cancún adults-only market. Expedia guests score it 9.2 out of 10 across more than 1,500 reviews, Canadian travellers on Monarc.ca land at 4.7 out of 5, and the service is the reason: this is the resort where reviews name the waiter. The all-inclusive is honestly complete, the beach is one of the few near Cancún where swimming is the point, and nineteen years of running the same playbook shows in the good way.
The counterweights: it’s remote by design and expensive to leave. Evenings are quiet. The building is not new, and the newest thing on the strip is next door. Rates start around $565 US a night in shoulder season and climb hard in winter, so it’s never the budget pick. But in a category full of resorts that put their best features behind upgrade wristbands, this one mostly doesn’t, and that’s why it keeps topping the lists.
If a calm beach, walk-in dinners, and being remembered by name sound like your week, this is a strong booking. Check current pricing on Expedia and read the newest reviews before you commit, because the winter rates are a different conversation from the September ones.
