By Mark and Clare, Pack With Purpose. We haven’t stayed at Catalonia Royal Tulum yet, so this is our researched guide rather than a firsthand review. Everything below comes from the resort’s own information, current booking listings, recent guest reviews, and a few travellers’ written accounts of their stays. When we’ve been, we’ll update this with how it actually felt.
Can you get an adults-only all-inclusive on the Riviera Maya for about CA$700 a night in February and still get a beach worth the flight? At Catalonia Royal Tulum the answer is yes, with conditions. It’s a 288-room, four-diamond resort on Xpu-Ha beach, about 25 kilometres north of the Tulum ruins and the same distance south of Playa del Carmen. On Expedia’s Canadian site it scores 9.0 out of 10 from more than a thousand reviews. The conditions start with the seaweed season and the walking, and they’re all below.
Getting there
Fly into Cancún, not Tulum. The resort is 85 kilometres south of Cancún airport, about 75 to 90 minutes by road. Toronto alone, for instance, has 33 nonstops a week to Cancún across five airlines, four to four and a half hours in the air. Tulum’s new airport sounds closer because of the name, and it isn’t. It’s 78 kilometres and a little over an hour from the resort, so about the same drive time as Cancún, and Toronto has one nonstop a week to it from each of WestJet and Air Canada. In other words, fly there only if the fare wins.
Canadians need a passport valid for the length of the stay and no visa for up to 180 days. You also fill in the digital immigration form (FMMD) online when you land. Air Canada Vacations and WestJet Vacations both sell the resort as a package with the transfer in it. For example, WestJet’s listing names the transfer, and Air Canada’s adds a US$100 resort credit on stays of seven nights or more. If you book the room on its own, a shared shuttle or rideshare from Cancún runs about US$55 to $70 ($) for the 85-kilometre drive. Otherwise, the Mayab bus from Terminal 2 to Xpu-Ha is a few dollars ($) and about two hours if you’re travelling light.
Two small charges also sit outside the room rate ($). One is a municipal tax of about 59 pesos a room a night, which Expedia says is collected at the hotel. The other is the environmental fee on the resort’s own site, 29.32 pesos a person a night.
The setting and who it’s for
Catalonia is a Spanish hotel company, and this is its adults-only resort at Xpu-Ha, opened in 2000 and rated Four Diamond by the AAA. The 288 rooms are in six three-storey buildings with no elevators. They sit on a beachfront lot of jungle and mangrove off the Cancún to Chetumal highway, with cenotes on the grounds and a coati or two on the paths. One main covered path connects the lobby, the restaurants, the rooms, the pool and the beach. Even so, a July 2026 guest’s words for it were “a lot of walking to go to bars and restaurants.” Overall, TripAdvisor guests rate it 4.5 out of 5 from more than 15,000 reviews, first of the three hotels in Xpu-Ha, with cleanliness at 4.7 and service at 4.6.
Who it suits
Two adults who want a quiet, mid-sized resort with a real beach, good service and a rate that comes in around CA$700 a night in high season. Guests in 2026 use the words peace and quiet, and the recreation team gets named, repeatedly, in the same reviews. If you’ll leave the resort, this is also a good base for it. Cenote Azul, for example, is a two-minute drive, the Tulum ruins are half an hour, and Playa del Carmen is twenty minutes.
Who should skip it
Anyone who needs an ocean view from the room, because there isn’t one in any category. Anyone who wants a big pool scene, since there’s one main pool. And anyone booking July to September who wants to swim in the sea every day. That’s because it’s the peak of the seaweed season on this coast, and the beach section below explains what that means.
What the all-inclusive covers
In the rate
Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The buffet at La Palapa for breakfast and lunch, then the four à la carte restaurants at dinner (a fifth, BLoved, is Privileged only). Then Sorrento by the pool for pizza and snacks at lunch. Also 24-hour room service, the drinks at the four bars, including the swim-up one, the minibar, and Wi-Fi in the rooms and around the resort.
The daily activity program is in too, with aquagym, water polo, beach volleyball, dance classes and yoga, as well as the nightly entertainment. So are kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling, an introductory scuba lesson, and the gym. On drinks, however, the two listings we read use different words. Expedia’s Canadian site says “select beverages,” while Air Canada Vacations says unlimited local and international drinks. Premium wines are extra ($).
Costs extra ($)
Rauxa, the dinner-and-acrobatics show, Wednesday to Sunday. Likewise, spa treatments and the water circuit at Alegría Spa. The dive centre beyond the intro lesson, excursions booked through the tour desk, and laundry. The transfer, if it didn’t come in a package. A July 2026 guest adds one more: room service won’t bring alcohol to a standard room.
The Privileged tier ($)
Privileged is the resort’s paid tier, and it’s a room category rather than a wristband: Privileged Deluxe, Privileged Romance, Privileged Romance Deluxe and Privileged Junior Suite. First, it buys unlimited access to BLoved, the à la carte restaurant on the beach that does breakfast, lunch and dinner. BLoved is also the only restaurant here with a sea view. Then there’s a reserved section of beach with Bali beds and snack and drinks service, the BLoved bar, and 60 minutes in the spa’s water circuit once per stay. Finally, 10 percent off spa treatments and other extras, and early check-in and late check-out when they have the space.
The 2026 reviews from guests who didn’t buy it are worth reading. For instance, one says the seats near the ocean are kept for Privileged guests even when they’re empty. On Expedia’s Canadian site the step up from a Premium Room to Privileged Deluxe was CA$80 a night for a February 2027 week, both at the member price.
Amenities
The rooms
The standard rooms are 38 square metres with a king or two doubles and a balcony or terrace. The Premium Room is the renovated one at that size, with a ceiling fan, USB sockets and reading lights. It’s also the category Expedia’s Canadian site lists first. By comparison, the Junior Suite and the Privileged Junior Suite go to 46 square metres with a sofa, double sinks and a rain shower. Every room looks at garden or jungle. There are no ocean views, and the resort’s own pages don’t offer one.
The complaint in the 2026 reviews is age. The building dates from 2000, and an August guest said the air conditioning “struggled to keep up,” with a musty smell mentioned by others. There are no elevators, so ask for a ground floor if stairs are a problem. Meanwhile, a repeat guest recommends the Palma building for being close to the lobby and the restaurants.
Pools
One large central pool, open 8 to 8, with a whirlpool in the middle, Baqua, the swim-up bar, and the aquagym and water polo sessions. In addition, a separate quiet area called Pure has Bali beds and its own pool. On the beach there’s an outdoor whirlpool with a sea view, and a repeat guest notes it isn’t heated. Expedia’s review summary lists “limited pool amenities” among the complaints. In other words, there’s one pool for 288 rooms.
Food and dining
Dinner is à la carte only. La Palapa, the buffet with the large outdoor terrace, serves breakfast and lunch and then closes. So every evening is one of five restaurants: Adelita for Mexican, Mamma Mia for Italian, Steakville for grilled meats, Tao Cat for Asian, and BLoved if you’re Privileged. The resort’s site says Tao Cat needs a reservation. A repeat guest also found a QR-code booking system covering dinners, so ask at the front desk on day one. Finally, at the four à la carte restaurants the resort’s rule is no shorts or sleeveless shirts for men and closed shoes for everyone.
What guests say in 2026: breakfast and the buffet staff get the warmest mentions, and the Italian and the Asian are the two named as very good at dinner. However, the buffet itself gets “average at best” from one guide site. Sorrento’s pizza had a poor write-up from a repeat guest, and a visitor in October found the food overall “left a little to be desired.” Rauxa, the dinner show, books out, so reserve it at check-in if you want it ($).
Bars
Four: the Tequila Bar for pre-dinner drinks, Baqua in the pool, Ma Loo on the beach for tropical fruit juices, and the BLoved bar in the Privileged section. The minibar is included, and the 2026 complaint on Expedia is that it’s mostly beer.
The beach
Xpu-Ha is a three-kilometre bay of fine white sand, and a guest who came in October describes calm water past the first line of waves. Meanwhile, the southern end, towards the public beach club, tends to stay clearer.
The seaweed is the thing to plan around, so here it is in plain terms. Sargassum is a brown seaweed that drifts in from the open Atlantic. It lands on this coast in bulk from about May to October, with July to September the worst months. When it comes in, it piles up on the sand and floats in the shallows, and as it sits it smells. The resort rakes it off the beach every day, but it can’t stop the next lot arriving. As a result, on a bad day the water isn’t somewhere you’d want to swim. A guest in June 2026 called the beach “virtually impossible to enjoy.”
In contrast, from November to April it’s mostly absent and the beach is what the photos show. So if swimming in the sea every day is the point of the trip, book November to April. If you’re going in summer, expect the pool to be your swim on some days instead.

Spa and gym
Alegría Spa has six treatment rooms, including rooms for couples, and a water circuit of sauna, steam room, whirlpool and showers. Treatments and the circuit are extra ($). Privileged guests get one hour in the circuit per stay, and Air Canada Vacations bookings carry a 20 percent spa discount. Beach massages are also offered on the sand. The gym has cardio and weights with a sea view, and nobody in the 2026 reviews says much about it either way.
Entertainment
Daytime is the recreation team: aquagym, water polo, pool parties, dance classes, and a Sunday pool party with a taco cart. Saturday is Mexican night with a barbacoa. Evenings, meanwhile, are shows by the pool, since there’s no theatre, plus Rauxa’s dinner-and-acrobatics show Wednesday to Sunday ($). An August 2026 review names five of the team and says they “deserve it all; raises, extra vacation time.” That’s the tone of most of the entertainment comments this year.
Service
This is what the resort is best at, by the reviews. “Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming and attentive” is a 2026 line, and TripAdvisor’s service score is 4.6. The one recurring exception is the vacation club, a paid membership program one guest called “essentially a timeshare.” Specifically, its sales staff wear white shirts and work the resort for guests to sit through a presentation. A June 2026 guest said they were approached “every single day.” An October visitor who went was quoted memberships from US$5,000 to $21,000 a year. In short, it’s a no you may have to repeat.
Our take
Catalonia Royal Tulum is a well-run, well-priced adults-only resort on a three-kilometre beach, and the reviews back that up: 9.0 on Expedia.ca, 4.5 on TripAdvisor, cleanliness at 4.7 and service at 4.6. For two adults who want quiet, a good beach in the dry season, and a bill that leaves money for a cenote day, we’d book it. Specifically, in a Premium Room, between November and April.
Then the catches. The rooms are 26 years old and face the garden, not the sea. There’s one pool. Dinner is à la carte only, and the buffet closes after lunch. The walking between the rooms, the restaurants and the beach is a real complaint. Above all, the beach can disappear under sargassum in summer. And the vacation club will ask. So we’d go in the dry season, and we’d pay for Privileged only if the beachfront seats and the sea-view restaurant matter to you.
