The Vipbox 28-inch is a polycarbonate checked case from a brand that only arrived on Amazon in 2024. It’s light for its size, it expands, and it costs a lot less than the established names. The trade is in the hardware, and owners are split on whether it holds up.

We haven’t travelled with this one ourselves, so what follows is the spec and what owners keep saying about it.

Polycarbonate shell, YKK zip, 25 percent more room

The shell is 100 percent polycarbonate. Vipbox lists the 28-inch at 75 by 50 by 31 centimetres and 4.5 kilograms. An expansion zipper adds up to 25 percent more room. The main zipper is YKK, the lock is a TSA-accepted combination lock built into the shell, and the handle is a three-stage aluminium telescopic. Inside there are full zippered compartments on both halves and X-shaped compression straps. It comes in six colours including white, and the same design is sold as a 20-inch, a 20/28 pair, a 20/24/28 trio, and an eight-piece set. Vipbox covers it with a three-year limited warranty.

Two people, one checked bag

This is the case for a couple who’d rather check one big bag than two small ones. Both halves take a full load, the straps hold it in place, and on the way home the expansion zip takes the extra you picked up. Just weigh it before you leave for the airport. A 28-inch case this roomy hits a 23 kilogram allowance well before it’s full.

What keeps coming up

The positives are consistent. Owners call it light, the wheels roll smoothly and quietly, and it looks more expensive than it is. Several have put it through five or six flights with surface marks but no cracks. People who chose white or a pastel say it scuffed and showed dirt after the first flight, and a few recommend a cover if you want a light colour.

The complaint that matters is the zipper. A number of owners had the main zipper fail on a first or early trip, in one case spilling the contents onto the carousel. A lock that stopped working and a handle that bent are in the same set of reviews. It’s a minority of buyers, but it isn’t a tiny one, and it’s the same part each time. Two smaller notes: one owner weighed the 28-inch heavier than listed, and buyers of the 20-inch should know that size doesn’t expand.
