Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort is a 5-star all-inclusive on a quiet stretch of sand about ten miles north of Cancún. Out of five Mexico resorts we compared, this is the one we’d send a value-minded traveller to first. It isn’t flawless, and we’ll be honest about where it slips. Still, for a couple or a family who want a comfortable, resort-based week without a luxury-tier price, it earns the pick.
So this guide covers how to get there, who it suits, what the all-inclusive actually includes, and where guests say it falls short. That way, you can decide if it’s your week before you book.
Getting there
Dreams Playa Mujeres is one of the easier Cancún-area resorts to reach. You fly into Cancún International Airport, and the drive north to Playa Mujeres runs roughly 40 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
A private van for up to eight people starts around $64 each way, so most couples and families simply book that. Larger groups can take a bigger van, and there are luxury SUV transfers too. Book the transfer ahead of time rather than sorting it in the arrivals hall, and you’ll skip the taxi hustle. One tip, because the resort sits in a gated development: give your driver the exact resort name, not just “Playa Mujeres.”
The setting and who it’s for
Playa Mujeres is a calm, gated area north of the main Cancún hotel strip, and that location sets the whole tone. You get a swimmable, gentle beach and a quiet setting, without the spring-break noise of downtown. So if you want to step out of your room into a party, this isn’t that.
With 502 suites, it’s a big resort. Still, it’s built to work for two very different guests at once. For instance, families get the water park, the pools, and a kids’ club. Couples get adults-only pools and bars, and, with the Preferred Club tier, access to the quieter grown-up corners. As a result, it fits our 30 to 55 traveller whether the kids are coming or staying home.
So who should skip it? Anyone set on an adults-only resort with no children anywhere, because kids are part of the mix here. And if walkable nightlife is the goal, you’ll spend the week wishing you were closer to Cancún proper.
What the all-inclusive covers
Dreams runs on the Unlimited-Luxury plan, and it’s genuinely generous. Your rate covers every meal across the à la carte restaurants and the buffet, drinks at every bar, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi, the nightly entertainment, non-motorized watersports, the on-site water park, and tips. On top of that, the specialty restaurants take no reservations, which is a welcome change from resorts that make you book dinner days ahead.
A few things cost extra ($): spa treatments, golf green fees, off-property excursions, and certain top-shelf wines and spirits. The coffee and ice cream at Dolce, however, are included, so that’s not one to worry about.
There’s also one paid tier worth knowing. Preferred Club ($) unlocks a private lounge, upgraded room locations, a dedicated stretch of beach and pool, and extra concierge help. Adults in Preferred Club can use some facilities at the neighbouring Secrets resort too. So whether it’s worth the upcharge depends on how much time you’ll spend chasing a quieter, more polished experience.

Rooms
Every one of the 502 units is a suite, so the baseline is comfortable: space, a sitting area, and views that range from garden to full ocean. Some guests do note the décor feels a little dated in spots. So if a fresh, modern room matters to you, look at the higher categories or Preferred Club before you book.
Pools
This is the standout. There’s over 65,000 square feet of pool here, including a grotto pool, a lazy river, swim-up bars, and quieter adult pools. It’s a lot of water, and it’s the main reason families and couples can share the resort without stepping on each other.
Food and drink
The dining runs deep. The à la carte restaurants cover real range: Fusion for Japanese and Peruvian, Gaucho Grill for Brazilian steakhouse rodizio, L’Etoile for French, Maris for seafood, MezÉs for Mediterranean, and Tres Colores for Mexican. World Café handles the buffet, while casual spots like Tides and That’s A Wrap fill the gaps. Here’s the honest catch, though: not every restaurant opens every night, and at peak times the lines get long. Eat a little earlier or later, and you’ll dodge the worst of it.
Bars
In fact, there are thirteen bars and lounges, from swim-up and lazy-river bars to a theater bar and Spin, an adults-only sports bar and disco. For families, the non-alcoholic bars for kids and teens are a thoughtful touch.
Beach
The sand is soft and the water is swimmable, which is the main draw. Still, one honest note: this coast gets seasonal seaweed, and while the resort works to keep it cleared, some weeks are better than others. So if a pristine beach is your top priority, check recent reviews for the month you’re travelling.
Spa and wellness
In addition, the Dream Spa runs nearly 16,000 square feet, with Mayan-inspired treatments and a hydrotherapy area. Guests rate it a highlight. The treatments are an upcharge, though, not part of the all-inclusive.
Gym and fitness
Likewise, a well-equipped fitness center comes included, which covers most travellers who want to keep a routine going.
Entertainment and activities
Meanwhile, nightly shows, live music, pool activities, and the water park keep the days full. And for anyone who plays, there’s a golf course attached to the development, with green fees paid separately.
Kids and teens
The Explorer’s Club looks after younger children, roughly ages 3 to 12, while the Core Zone gives teens their own space. Paired with the water park, that makes this a strong pick for families who want the kids happily busy.
Service and Wi-Fi
Guests consistently praise the warm service, and individual staff members get named in reviews. The one recurring frustration is the timeshare sales pressure, so a polite, firm “no thank you” helps. Wi-Fi is included, but reviewers say the signal can be weak for streaming. So don’t count on it for video calls from the beach.
Is Dreams Playa Mujeres worth it?
For the money, yes. Dreams Playa Mujeres delivers a swimmable beach, a huge pool complex, a deep list of restaurants, and enough room for couples and families to each get their kind of holiday. That’s why it was our best-value pick of the five Mexico resorts we looked at.
It isn’t perfect, though. The Wi-Fi is soft, the beach gets seaweed some weeks, the popular restaurants queue up at peak dinner hours, and the timeshare pitch is a known annoyance. None of those are deal-breakers for most people, but you should walk in knowing about them.
So if that trade sounds right, it’s an easy resort to recommend.
