Nearly 26,000 travellers have rated this resort, and they’ve landed at 4.8 out of 5. That number is the story. Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa is an adults-only all-inclusive on Juanillo Beach in the gated Cap Cana enclave south of Punta Cana, and by review score it’s one of the most consistently loved resorts in the entire Dominican Republic. Our job in this guide is to tell you what’s behind that score, what the short list of catches actually is, and whether you belong in the group it was built for.
Getting there
The transfer might be the best in the Caribbean. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) sits about 15 minutes from the resort gate, so you can be checked in with a drink in hand less than an hour after wheels down. After a few trips spent staring out a shuttle window for 90 minutes, we can’t overstate how good that is.
From Canada it’s an easy one: direct flights to Punta Cana run year-round from Toronto and Montreal, and seasonally from several other cities, on Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, and Sunwing. You’ll need your passport, and the Dominican Republic’s entry and exit form (the free online e-ticket with the QR code). Fill it out before you fly, screenshot the code, and the arrivals hall goes much faster. Prices at the resort are in US dollars, so budget with the exchange rate in mind.
The setting and who it’s for
Cap Cana is a private, gated community, and the resort sits inside it on Juanillo Beach: fine white sand, palm trees, and water that stays calm because the reef and the bay do the work. The flip side of the gate is isolation. Leaving the enclave means a taxi, and taxis from here aren’t cheap ($), so this is a stay-put trip, not a base for exploring the country.
This one’s for couples, full stop. It’s adults-only, 18 and up, and the whole rhythm of the place is built around grown-up quiet: two people reading by a pool, a long dinner, a swim before breakfast. It fits an anniversary, a honeymoon, or the first trip after the kids can finally stay with someone else. If that’s the trip you’re planning, the review numbers say this is one of the safest picks in Punta Cana.
Who should skip it: families, obviously, since kids can’t come at any price. Anyone who wants big nightlife should also think twice. Guests consistently describe the evening entertainment as the resort’s weak spot, and the party scene winds down early. And if you like leaving the resort every second day, the gated setting and taxi costs will wear on you.
What does the all-inclusive cover?
Secrets runs on what the Hyatt Inclusive Collection calls Unlimited-Luxury, and it’s one of the more generous versions of all-inclusive out there.
Included: all meals at nine restaurants with no reservations required, premium spirits (not just house pours), cocktails, wine, and beer, 24-hour room service, a minibar restocked daily, a Nespresso machine in the suite, Wi-Fi, non-motorized watersports, yoga and Pilates classes, the hydrotherapy areas of the spa (sauna and steam), nightly entertainment, and even phone calls home to Canada and the US. No wristbands anywhere.
Costs extra ($): spa treatments, motorized watersports, golf at the Cap Cana courses, excursions, taxis beyond the gate, and the Preferred Club upgrade. Preferred Club buys a private lounge, a dedicated concierge, an exclusive pool and beach section, and breakfast at Oceana; reviewers say it’s worth it if the budget stretches, and also that the base experience gets a little less attention than it should when the resort is full.
This is a premium-tier resort with pricing to match. The famous swim-out casitas, standalone suites with their own lazy-river pool access, start around US$800 a night. Check current pricing before you book, because rates swing hard with the season.
Amenities
Suites
All 457 rooms are suites, and guests describe them as spacious, spotless, and genuinely luxurious, with balconies and a lot of ocean views. The swim-out casitas are the splurge everyone photographs. One quirk several reviewers mention: the motion-sensor room lighting has a mind of its own and switches off if you sit still too long.
Pools
Multiple pools including a lazy river and a swim-up bar, plus the Preferred-only pool. Loungers at the main pool go early in peak season.
Food and drink
Nine restaurants without a single reservation needed: Oceana for seafood, Bordeaux for French, Himitsu for pan-Asian and teppanyaki, Portofino for Italian, El Patio for Mexican, The Steakhouse, Seaside Grill, Barefoot Grill by the sand, and the Market Cafe buffet. The honest read from thousands of reviews: variety is excellent, quality is good but uneven, and the same dish can land differently from one restaurant to the next. Nobody goes hungry; a few foodies leave underwhelmed.
Bars
Six of them, pouring premium brands at no upcharge, including the 24-hour Coco Cafe for coffee and late-night bites.
The beach
Juanillo is the kind of beach the Dominican Republic puts on postcards, and guests call it one of the most beautiful they’ve seen. The catch is sargassum. Seaweed arrives in patches seasonally, the resort rakes it daily, and some weeks the ocean is still more for looking than swimming. If a swimmable ocean is non-negotiable, travel outside the peak sargassum months (roughly May through August) or plan to love the pools.
Spa
Secrets Spa by Pevonia, with the sauna, steam, and hydrotherapy circuit included and treatments extra ($).
Gym and fitness
A proper fitness centre plus included yoga and Pilates classes.
Entertainment
Nightly live music, themed shows, and a small nightclub. This is the resort’s most consistent criticism: guests call it below average for the price tier, and late-night options are limited. Couples who plan on early dinners and long mornings won’t care. The flip side is what the resort does instead: occasions. Think candlelit dinners set right on the sand under strung-up chandeliers.
Our take
The 4.8 is earned. Service is the thing this resort does better than almost anyone in Punta Cana, the suites and grounds deliver, the inclusions are unusually generous, and the 15 minute transfer removes the worst part of a Caribbean trip. The catches are real but small: uneven kitchens, quiet nights, seasonal seaweed, and a Preferred Club system that works best for the people who pay for it.
If you’re a couple in your 30s to 50s planning an anniversary, a honeymoon, or a proper week off, book it with confidence. If you need a family resort, look at its sister property Dreams down the coast instead. And if a swimmable ocean is the whole point, check the sargassum forecast for your dates before you commit.
