Must-See Christmas Events In Canada: A Festive Journey Across The Country
The first frost transforms Canada bringing promises of good cheer around warm hearths, a landscape of sparkling lights, and a visit from the big man in the red suit. It’s the magic of fairytales and ice-skating under the moonlight.
If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas where you can hear the sleigh bells in the snow, a Dickensian Christmas minus the Scrooges, or the perfect setting for a photograph in that ugly Christmas sweater knitted by your favourite aunt, then this is the article for you. Every province in the country has a distinct Christmas flavour worth exploring and we’ve curated a few of our favourite events that we know are sure to become yours.
Toronto Christmas Market & More, Ontario

It isn’t Christmas in Toronto without a visit to the historic Distillery District with its cobbled-stoned streets and its Christmas Market featuring Canada’s most photographed Christmas tree. The kids have Santa’s village with a unique theme every year while adults can indulge in several holiday bars with quirky festive themes. Reminiscent of European winter markets, artisans from across the province showcase handmade crafts, carollers perform as Santa’s elves roam the streets, and there are plenty of photo ops to be had. It has free entry during quieter times, making it immensely affordable too. Other events worth checking out are the 121-year-old Santa’s Parade and the free ice-skating rink at Nathan Phillips Square.
Québec City’s German Christmas Market, Quebec
Nothing shows off Canada’s melting pot of cultures like a German Christmas Market in a predominantly French-speaking region of Canada. Old Québec becomes a living snow globe around Christmastime with stone buildings dusted in white and soft yellow lights in the squares.
The German Christmas Market is filled with chalet-style stalls, hot Glühwein, gingerbread, and the perfect gifts for your loved ones from all over Europe. Taste maple taffy, or tire sur la neige, which is made from hot maple syrup poured on snow, take in a puppet show or visit Père Noël (Santa Claus). The best part is, if you stay in the old town, it’s all walkable, even with little ones.
A Winter Illumination Spectacle, Niagara Falls
It sounds impossible but the Niagara Falls are even more spectacular in winter with the Winter Festival of Lights. The roaring water turns into a moving painting as coloured lights play in the mist. Bundle up and watch the spectacle in from the parkway and enjoy spectacular fireworks over the frozen gorge every Friday and Saturday, or every night from Christmas onwards.
The Skylon Tower offers a warm perch high above the gorge, giving you a bird’s-eye view. Get another perspective from The Keg’s Fallsview which sits directly above the water. Niagara during the holidays is anything you want it to be – romantic, family-friendly, and full of sweet adventure.
Vancouver’s Canyon Lights, British Columbia
A very famous play would probably be named a Mid-Winter’s Dream had the Canyon lights been around a few centuries ago. Vancouver’s Canyon turns into a bewitching forest pathway in December, lit up by millions of twinkling lights. The Capilano Suspension Bridge perched high above the canyon, turns into a floating river of lights perfectly positioned between the land and the skies welcoming you into a fairytale world.
Vancouver is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a warm(er) holiday.
Ottawa’s Winter Lights Across Canada, Ontario
Winter is the perfect time to visit Ottawa as it celebrates the holidays with the ceremony befitting the capital city. Downtown is lit up in vibrant colour, including Parliament Buildings, Confederation Boulevard, along with other heritage landmarks and parks across the district. There are routes you can follow on foot or from the warmth of your car. Stop for multimedia projections that tell winter stories across the façade of Parliament. For a hint of Europe, go skating on the Rideau Canal, just like they do in the Netherlands.
Banff Christmas & Santa Claus Parade of Lights, Alberta
Banff is a cozy little village nestled within the Rockies that turns into a Christmas village straight out of a Hallmark movie, with a side of skiing. Every part of the village has something to offer with hot chocolate trails to follow, sleigh rides, and ice-skating on a lake. The annual Santa Claus Parade of Lights is a radiant celebration featuring illuminated floats, live performers, music, and mountain-town cheer as Banff Avenue sparkles beneath festive garlands. Ride up to the very top of Sulphur mountain in the Banff Gondola for more Christmas fun.
Bluebird skies during the day, crisp mountain air, and a long soak in the hot springs under starry skies. Life can’t get more perfect.
Charlottetown’s Victorian Christmas Market, Prince Edward Island
You can’t help getting your fill of Christmas cheer as Charlottetown embraces its heritage with a Victorian-style Christmas market. The largest open-air market in Atlantic Canada, you’ll find food and curios from vendors from across PEI. Lights line the waterfront, reminding you you’re on an island while seafood restaurants around the city serve up hearty winter fare. Carollers, horse and wagon rides, and breakfasts with Santa all come together for to create a warm, intimate, Christmas. Charlottetown offers a quieter celebration than many cities in Eastern Canada but dials it up on the romance.
